If you're paying from an Indian, Nepali, or Chinese bank account, your bank may charge a 2–4% forex conversion markup on top of the credit card surcharge. - Insurance must cover at minimum hospital treatment

These are the most frequent — and entirely avoidable — reasons applicants lose their $4,600 fee. Read carefully.
Applying Before Receiving the Official Completion Letter
Many students apply the day their exams end or when results are released. This is wrong. The Department requires an official Completion Letter from your institution's academic registry — not an exam results email, not a graduation invitation. Applications submitted without this document are refused outright.
⏱️ Timing ErrorSubmitting Without the AFP Police Check Receipt
You don't need the final AFP clearance certificate before lodging — but you must have the AFP application receipt. Applicants who attach "coming soon" notes or placeholder text are refused immediately. The application receipt must exist in your application at time of submission.
📄 Document ErrorUsing an English Test Result Older Than 12 Months
The 485 has a unique 1-year English test validity rule — unlike most other Australian visas which accept 3-year-old results. Thousands of applicants use results from their Student Visa application thinking they are still valid. They are not. The test must have been taken within 12 months of the date you lodge.

You have exactly 6 months from your Completion Letter date to lodge your 485. This is NOT from your graduation ceremony. If your Completion Letter is dated 15 April and you lodge on 20 October — you are refused. There is no extension, no grace period, and no exception. The fee is non-refundable.
