Which Skilled Visa Is Right for You?

Australia's points-based system has three main pathways. The right one depends on your score, occupation, and whether you have state or regional sponsorship.

Permanent Residency
189

Skilled Independent Visa

Permanent residency without employer or state sponsorship. The most prestigious pathway — ideal for high-scorers with in-demand occupations.

  • No sponsorship required
  • Live and work anywhere in Australia
  • Permanent residency from day one
  • 65+ points required (85–90 invited)
  • Occupation must be on the MLTSSL
Permanent Residency
190

Skilled Nominated Visa

Permanent residency via state or territory nomination. Nomination adds 5 bonus points and opens a broader occupation list than the 189.

  • State/territory nomination required
  • +5 points for nomination
  • Permanent residency from grant
  • Initially live in nominating state
  • Broader occupation list
Provisional → PR
491

Skilled Work Regional Visa

A 5-year provisional visa in a regional area, leading to permanent residency via Subclass 191. Adds 15 bonus points and has a lower points threshold.

  • State/territory or family nomination
  • +15 points for nomination
  • 5-year provisional — pathway to 191 PR
  • Live and work in regional Australia
  • Lower effective points threshold

Our clients come from all over the world and all walks of life. Here's what they say about working with us.

★★★★★

"I tried to navigate the points system on my own and gave up after two weeks. The team at Global Migrations calculated my score, found two bonus points I had missed, and had my EOI lodged the same week. Got my 189 invitation 3 months later."

Mohammed A.
Subclass 189 — Software Engineer
★★★★★

"They recommended the 190 pathway because my score wasn't high enough for the 189. That turned out to be exactly right — I had Victoria nomination within 2 months and my PR was granted 9 months later. Couldn't be happier."

Priya S.
Subclass 190 — Registered Nurse
★★★★★

"As a tradesperson I wasn't sure the skilled migration pathway was even open to me. Global Migrations explained the 491 regional pathway and how it leads to permanent residency. My visa was granted and I'm now living in the Barossa Valley."

Lucas M.
Subclass 491 — Electrician

Skilled Migration — Common Questions

Processing times vary significantly. Skills assessments take 4–16 weeks. SkillSelect EOI rounds happen monthly. After invitation, a Subclass 189 application typically takes 6–18 months for the Department to process. We keep you updated throughout and ensure your application never stalls due to missing documents.
The official minimum is 65 points but most 189 invitations now go to applicants scoring 80–95+ points. For the 190, it depends on the state — some nominate at 65 with occupation demand. For the 491, the effective threshold is lower due to the +15 regional bonus. We advise you honestly based on current invitation data.
Yes. Your partner and dependent children can all be included in one application. If your partner has a positive skills assessment and meets English proficiency requirements, you can also claim the partner skills bonus — an additional 10 points on your score.
Your occupation must appear on a relevant skilled occupation list. If it's not on the MLTSSL for the 189, it may still be on the STSOL or a state-specific occupation list for the 190 or 491. We check all applicable lists, advise on the closest matching ANZSCO code, and identify your most viable pathway.
No. You can be onshore or offshore when you apply. We work with clients worldwide via video call, secure document sharing, and email. That said, if you're already in Australia on a valid visa, that can be advantageous for some state nomination pathways.
A skills assessment is an official review of your qualifications and work experience by a body approved by the Australian Government. Which body depends entirely on your occupation — Engineers Australia for engineers, VETASSESS for many professional roles, ACS for IT professionals, AHPRA for health practitioners, and so on. We identify the right body and help you compile a compelling assessment application.
