Understand Your Current Position

The Australian points test awards points for age, English language ability, work experience, education, and additional factors like state nomination. Most skilled migration applicants start with a baseline of 45–60 points (age, education, English, and work experience). If you're below the current SkillSelect cutoff for your occupation, the strategies below will help you gain the additional 10–25 points needed to become competitive.

Strategy 1: Improve Your English Language Score (10–20 Points)

English language proficiency is the single fastest way to boost your points. The points system recognizes four tiers: Competent (0 points), Proficient (10 points), Highly Proficient (10 points), and Superior (20 points). Most skilled workers start at Proficient (10 points) through qualifications or prior tests. Achieving Superior—either through PTE Academic or IELTS—adds an additional 10 points at no penalty.

PTE Academic is the fastest route: you can test within 2–3 weeks and receive results within 3 days. To achieve Superior, you need a score of 79 or above. IELTS requires 8.0 or above in all bands, which is more stringent. The investment is minimal: test costs are $350–$400 AUD, and preparation takes 6–12 weeks of focused study if you're already working professionally in English. For non-native speakers, this 10-point gain is frequently the difference between invitation and rejection.

Strategy 2: Complete a Professional Year (5 Points)

A Professional Year program is a 12-month, paid, structured program combining practical workplace experience with professional skills development. It's exclusively available in Australia and recognized by the Department of Home Affairs for 5 points. Engineering, accounting, IT, and nursing all have dedicated Professional Year programs. Upon completion, you gain 5 SkillSelect points and enhanced employment readiness.

The catch: you must already be in Australia on a valid visa (typically a student visa or temporary skilled visa) to enrol. The program costs $3,000–$6,000 and takes a full year. If you're currently on a student visa graduating this year, this is an ideal move. If you're offshore, combining a Professional Year with other strategies becomes more complex, but it's still valuable.

Strategy 3: Leverage State Nomination (5 Points)

State sponsorship adds 5 points to your SkillSelect score and unlocks access to state-specific occupation lists, which are often longer than the national list. Critically, state nomination means you compete within a smaller, state-specific applicant pool rather than against thousands nationally. For occupations like software engineers where national cutoffs are 85+ points, your state cutoff might be 75–80 points—a huge difference.

Every Australian state operates its own nomination program (skilled independent – 190 visa). Priority states in 2026 include South Australia (aggressively attracting IT and healthcare), Victoria (engineering and construction), Queensland (healthcare and allied health), and Western Australia (skilled trades and engineering). Research your occupation's demand in these states and consider relocation as part of your strategy. State nomination is worth 5 SkillSelect points plus a dramatically easier pathway to invitation.

Strategy 4: Complete Australian Qualification (5–10 Points)

Completing a qualification (Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Bachelor's degree) in Australia adds points and strengthens your PR application. A Diploma or Advanced Diploma adds 5 points; a Bachelor's or postgraduate qualification adds 5 points. More importantly, Australian qualifications are highly valued by the Department and state sponsors. An Australian Bachelor's degree in your skilled occupation (even if you already hold an overseas degree) significantly improves your visa prospects.

This strategy is best combined with the Professional Year path: complete a 2-year Diploma whilst working, then undertake a Professional Year. However, this is a 2–3 year investment. If you're currently on a student visa or have access to temporary visas, it's worthwhile. If you're offshore with limited visa pathways, it may not be practical.

Strategy 5: Regional Study Bonus (5–15 Points)

Studying in a regional Australian area (outside major city centers) can grant bonus points. The precise points vary by program, but typically you can earn 5–15 additional points through regional study. This includes completing your Professional Year in a regional location or undertaking a qualification in regional Australia. States like South Australia, Tasmania, and regional Queensland offer enhanced bonus point programs.

This is combined with state nomination: study regionally in your target state, earn bonus points, then apply for that state's regional migration program. Your effective points can increase by 15–20 through this combination. The time investment is significant (1–2 years of study), but the payoff is a clearer pathway to PR.

Strategy 6: Naati Community Language (5 Points)

The Naati Certified Practising Translator (CCL) qualification in a community language (any language other than English) awards 5 points. If you speak a language fluently (your native language or a second language), achieving Naati CCL is a straightforward 5-point gain. The certification requires passing a practical translation/interpreting assessment, which typically takes 3–6 months of preparation. Naati CCL assessments cost approximately $600, and preparation materials are widely available.

This is an excellent strategy if you're multilingual. Many skilled professionals already speak a second language; formalizing it through Naati CCL is a quick win. Note: the Department only recognizes Naati CCL; other translation certifications don't qualify for points.

Strategy 7: Partner Skills (5 Points)

If you're married or in a de facto relationship, your partner's qualifications can contribute up to 5 points to your application. Your partner must hold a qualification in an occupation on the skilled occupation list and meet English language requirements. If your partner qualifies, you gain 5 points without any effort on your part—though your partner must be named in your visa application.

Note: partner points are usually only available on 189 (independent) visas, not 190 (state-sponsored) visas, though some states are expanding access. Confirm with your migration agent before relying on this strategy.

Strategy 8: Extended Work Experience (Marginal Gains)

Work experience points are awarded in 5-year bands: 0 years (0 points), 1–3 years (5 points), 3–5 years (10 points), 5–8 years (15 points), 8+ years (20 points). If you're near a 5-year milestone (e.g., at 4.5 years of work experience), waiting a few months to reach 5 years adds 5 points. This is a passive strategy with no cost, but requires patience. It's worth considering if you're only a few months away from the next band.

Strategy 9: Age Optimization (Limited Strategy)

Age points award 25 points for applicants aged 25–32, then decline progressively: 15 points (33–37), 10 points (38–44), 5 points (45–49), 0 points (50+). If you're approaching age 33, your points will drop by 10 as soon as you turn 33. Conversely, if you're above 32, unfortunately age is no longer a way to gain points. This is a limited strategy, but if you're currently 31 and below the cutoff, consider applying before your 33rd birthday if possible.

The Practical Roadmap: What You Should Do Now

If you're currently 65 points and the cutoff is 80 points, your best strategies in order are: (1) sit for PTE or IELTS to achieve Superior English (+10 points, achievable in 3 months); (2) apply for state nomination in a priority state (+5 points, often achievable within 3–4 months); (3) apply for Naati CCL if multilingual (+5 points, achievable in 6 months). Total: 20 points, taking you to 85 points and above the national cutoff.

If you're in Australia on a student visa, combining a Professional Year (5 points) with English improvement (10 points) and state nomination (5 points) gets you 20 additional points in 12 months. This is your best path forward.
