How the process works
- 11
Create a SkillSelect EOI
Migration Tasmania says you must first create an EOI in SkillSelect.
- 22
Register an interest
You register an interest (ROI) on the Migration Tasmania Gateway. It is free and valid for six months.
- 33
Your ROI gets a pass colour
Gold, Green, Orange or Red. A Red Pass means you do not meet the minimum nomination requirements and cannot apply for nomination.

Invitation, then application
Migration Tasmania invites the most competitive candidates. The invitation to apply for nomination is valid for 28 days.
- 55
Home Affairs invites you
After nomination, Home Affairs invites you to apply for the visa. You have 60 calendar days to lodge it, and nomination does not guarantee the visa.
Pathways
Tasmania says every occupation on the Home Affairs subclass 190 and 491 skilled occupation lists is eligible for at least one of its nomination pathways. That covers people living in Tasmania; overseas, only the 190 job-offer pathway is open this year. The pathways are:
| Pathway | Visa | Key requirements Tasmania states |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Employment (TSE) | 190 | Matching work in Tasmania for at least 9 months (6 months for teaching, health and allied health occupations on the priority-occupation option; a longer-term option also exists), averaging 20+ hours a week, and living in Tasmania. You must intend to stay employed in Tasmania in your current industry for at least two years after nomination. |
| Skilled Employment (TSE) | 491 | A job paying at least $57,000 a year ($28.85 an hour) held in Tasmania for at least nine months, averaging 20+ hours a week. The job does not need to match your skills assessment (unless you are self-employed or a contractor), but needs a minimum 12-month contract with at least three months remaining when you apply. |
| Skilled Graduate (TSG) | 190 and 491 | A Tasmanian course. 190: at least 92 weeks, and two calendar years living in Tasmania from the start of the course. 491: at least 40 weeks, and one calendar year. |
| Established Resident (TER) | 190 and 491 | 190: lived in Tasmania for at least the last three years. 491: at least the last two years. |
| Business Operator (TBO) | 491 | Operating a business in Tasmania. |
| Health or Education Sector Job Offer (overseas) | 190 | A formal Tasmanian job offer closely related to your skills assessed occupation, within the listed ANZSCO groups. |
| Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles (overseas) | 491 | Invitation only. Migration Tasmania “will not be issuing invitations in this pathway for the 2026-27 program year”. |
Every pathway also needs the federal basics: under 45, a positive skills assessment, at least competent English and at least 65 points. See the pathway pages on Migration Tasmania’s site for the full rules, including income and employment definitions.
How candidates are ranked
Migration Tasmania says it invites “the registrations of interest with the highest total attribute score”. The colour you receive depends on whether you meet the minimum requirements and how your attributes score; Gold candidates can lodge straight away, and the other passes depend on score and available places.
Tasmania publishes the lowest score invited in the latest round (316 for the 190 and 75 for the 491 on 29 October 2026) and a six-week rolling average (326 and 78). It says an application is declined only if its score falls below both the most recent round and the rolling average. These are Tasmania’s own scores, not a pass mark or a forecast.
